Skybell Review

Southern California-based home automation developer, SkyBell Technologies Inc., has created a smart doorbell that features a microphone, video camera, speaker and exclusive motion sensor. Called Skybell, this doorbell is also Wi-Fi enabled which means that you can hear and speak from any mobile iOS and Android devices. SkyBell offers convenience, control and security while answering your entryways. It replaces your traditional doorbell with a high-tech approach and keeps you connected whether you’re at home, at your office or on the go. This Skybell video doorbell review will make you see why this smart, Wi-Fi video doorbell is convenient for many. It enables you to see, hear, and speak to anyone who’s on your doorstep, day or night, rain or shine, anywhere and anytime.

How Does the Skybell Wi-Fi Video Doorbell Work?

SkyBell has an easy setup feature. When visitors come knocking at your door, they will just have to press the front button on the device similar to what you do on a traditional doorbell. Once pressed, this prompts a mobile device alert and offers you the option of accepting or declining a call. You will be able to see a video feed on your screen if you decide to take the call. Additionally, you can see, hear or speak to your visitor.

Simultaneously, your visitors will be able to hear and talk to you through the SkyBell speaker. The video feed can be received and seen on your smartphone over Wi-Fi, 4G, and LTE. The digital doorbell chime also lets you hear your analog wired doorbell chime. In fact, you can control your doorbell’s sound directly from the app anytime and whenever you want.

SkyBell wifi doorbell requires full, direct power from a low-voltage transformer and connection to an analog wired doorbell ring. The transformer’s specifications should be 12-36 VAC or 12 VDC.

Skybell has the capability to add multiple users to each device, so everyone on your target phone list receives the call. With this doorbell, you can also snap photos or record videos directly into your device.

Skybell Wi-Fi Enabled Video Doorbell Features

  • Motion sensor
  • On Demand Camera
  • Night vision
  • 130-degree field view
  • Silent doorbell mode
  • Weather resistant
  • Works with Android and iOS devices
  • Infrared night vision LED
  • Two-way audio
  • Live Video

The round-shaped, UV-coated Skybell doorbell features a smooth-surfaced, brushed aluminum finish that will match any surface it is hooked in. Once installed, the doorbell button turns to green – a color indicator that signals a successful connection with your Wi-Fi router. If it turns red, the connection was unsuccessful. If you want a different kind of finish, the product offers two options: a silver brushed aluminum finish or oil rubbed bronze finish (flat black with bronze highlights).

The doorbell also includes a motion sensor, camera lens, an infrared LED night vision, and backlit ring button. Below the button is the microphone and speaker.

As a wireless doorbell, it connects to 802.11b/g wireless networks on the 2.4GHz band. While it works with iOS and Android mobile devices, it doesn’t have a web browser app yet. The two wires seen jutting from the back of the Skybell device should connect to a doorbell transformer. You have to set up wiring and install a transformer if your home is not currently doorbell wired. If you are looking for alternatives then you need to check Ring Wireless Video Doorbell Review and find out why it’s better than Skybell.

Let’s find out what pros and cons this product has.

PROS:
  • It comes with a kit with the mounting screws, base plates and everything you need to install it.
  • You will also find Allen wrench in the kit which helps you in securing the device to the mounting plate. The skybell installation guide is comprehensive too.
  • The SkyBell Wi-Fi intercom system with video is big on potential, but comes up short in terms of features and performance.
  • Easy set-up and installation
  • Wi-Fi enabled
  • Motion sensor
  • On-demand access
  • Night vision
  • Advanced encryption
  • 2-way audio
  • Weatherproof and water resistant
  • Picture and video features
  • Uses direct power – no need for battery changes

CONS:
  • The only drawback, however, that is most likely to put off some users is that it does not record calls, or any motion triggered event. This can be a hard to ignore feature if you are not continuously monitoring the movement in and around the house.
  • Also, there is no web app for this one
  • Low-resolution picture quality
  • Must use existing doorbell wiring
  • Doesn’t record calls
  • Doesn’t have a web app
  • No recording of motion-triggered events
  • Slow; could take up to a full minute to connect
  • Uses off-the-shelf parts that weren’t efficient enough
  • Not enough memory

This Skybell doorbell review notes the doorbell’s need for more additional features. It has potential but comes up short in performance (such as the sub par photo and video quality). It’s easy to install, but you would need an existing doorbell wiring to set it up. Lack of features aside, this Skybell Wi-Fi video doorbell version is an excellent choice for that added security measure, your peace of mind and convenience.

There are some alternative you can take a look like august doorbell and find how skybell doorbell vs ring compare between each other.

According to Skybell developers, they are currently working to resolve performance issues and developing additional essential features. They have Skybell HD wifi video doorbell where they improved nearly every feature.
