I want a house front door phone/video intercom system.
Simple, Up to say price of $200 or so.
What do you suggest?
Hi Frank,
If you prefer to use cell phone to answer the door then I will recommend to you Ring Doorbell.
If you want to have monitor at home like intercom then I suggest you to look into one of the models from 1Byone Video Doorbells.
Regards,
Yaro
How about a video door bell system that also has the ability to unlock the door (in this case a pedestrian gate at the edge of the property)? All, with the ability to be operated from an iPhone.
Hi Joel,
Ring Video Doorbell support smart lock systems from LockState, Kisi, or Lockitron.
You will able to open the lock through the app during the call if you have any of this locks installed into the gate.
Yaro
can this app be installed on multiple phones and tablets , i have a house of 6 people
Hello Mark,
Yes, you can!
Everyone will able to receive notifications and able to answer.
Question on Ring doorbell….I have an 8 ft iron fence surrounding my property. I saw the comment about weather resistance, which for me, was a concern. Also, though, I am wondering if there are any security features that disable the device, let’s say, if someone rips it from fence gate and wants to try to resell it. I would be using it in battery mode. I currently do not have a bell at the fence.
Hello Lynne,
Yes, it’s weather proof.
Ring doorbell will detect, record and store video in the cloud if someone will steal it. In this case Ring offers free replacement.
I think company able to disable the doorbell from their end to not able new users to use it.
I have been very happy with Foscam. I had three Philips prior to them and they just quit working when I got my Apple 2TB Time Machine wifi. Foscams work great.
Hello Patrick,
I am glad you have success with Foscam, they are great, but there better choices available.
I think Phillips cameras stopped working because it doesn’t support Wi-Fi bands that Apple Time Machine operates.
Hi Yaro
Just want to know if my wife and I can download the app to both of our phones so that we can both be aware of the caller?
Hello Martin,
Yes, you can.
You can share access to your Ring Doorbell with your wife, here you can find more information.
Hi,
I’ have purchase a ring video door bell, having trouble with it connecting to my wifi, have bought a wifi booster to boost my wifi but still does not work.
Hello Terasa,
Setup of Ring Video Doorbell is pretty straight forward and easy.
To help I will need more information from you.
Please contact with Ring Support and they will able troubleshoot the issue quickly.
Let me know how it goes.
I’m looking for a door bell system with the following features:
1. HD video surveillance
2. 2- way audio
3. Wifi connection
4. Ability to alert on an iPhone, with an automatic picture that comes up on the iPhone when the bell rings, and the ability to talk to the visitor from the iPhone.
5. Integration to either Nest or IRIS security, preferably both.
Any recommendations?
Hello Richard,
The best bet will Ring Video Doorbell Pro because it does have HD camera and you can view it anytime and it will record when motion sensor triggered.
Also, it does have 2-way audio and wifi connection and it’s integrated with Nest.
There another choice will be Skybell HD which is actually Nest certified doorbell.
Is there an Ip camera viewer out there what would allow me to view my Ring Doorbell and The Amcrest camera?
Hello Rob,
You can add ring doorbell and Amcrest camera to Smartthings Hub or other compatible hubs available and then you can setup your phone or tablet to control all from one app.
Let me know how the setting up goes and how do you like it.
Great review! Quick question.
If I connect to existing doorbell wiring when skybell button is pressed will it work with existing doorchime in house so we can hear doorbell ring.
Thx
Hello Jay,
Yes, it will work with existed wired and digital doorbell chime, but won’t work with wireless chime.
Let me know results after installation!
My door bell is on the right side wall. The camera would not face out. any recommendations on how to handle?
Hello Jim,
You need custom wedge plate and you can get 3d design here and print locally with 3d printer.
Let me know how it goes.
I need a video door bell with 4 monitors, BUT also the capability to talk between each monitor, for room to room communications in the house.
Hi Austi,
You are looking for house intercom and smart doorbell.
I suggest you to get NuBryte intercoms which are great, but for now they not supporting smart doorbells.
They said they are working on it and trying to able to work with Ring Pro and Skybell in future.
Regards,
Yaro
Great review, thank you Yaro.
Question: Is it possible to stream the video from this Ring Pro to a NAS?
Hi Alex,
Unfortunately, it’s not possible.
Regards,
Yaro
Hi Yaro
Hope you can help. Looking to put a front gate that leads to our garden. That then leads to our front door. We want to put some sort of system on our front gate that has the following features
1. Code lock
2. Ability to give people different codes
3. Ability to know when someone is at the front gate
4. Ability for our nanny to know when someone is at the front gate and she does not have a smart phone
5. Ability for us to while at work via our cell phones with the ability let someone
6. Video monitor built in our house so we can see who is at front gate
7. Ability to lock and unlock offsite
Phew. Thanks for this great site. What a great niche.
Hi James,
A lot of requirements you have, but I think I have solution.
You can get August Doorbell with the August lock and Keypad. Then you can install tablet in the house for the nanny to answer and open the door.
Let me know how it worked out for you.
Regards,
Yaro
My doorbell is to the right of my door, so the view would be from the side. Which one could I use to place forward facing?
Hi Anthony,
You can get any of them and get corner kit. For example you can get up to 45 degrees corner kit from Ring.
Regards,
Yaro
In either of them , When someone rings the door is there a bell that can be in the house in case your cell is on silent?
Hello Gustavo,
Yes, you can get Ring chimes for Ring and Ring Pro.
They are wireless and you can place them anywhere in the house.
Regards,
Yaro
You should also note that with RING doorbells, if a thief decides to steal the unit, thinking the footage is built into it, RING will replace it for free.
Not sure if Skybell or August have the same policy.
Hi Will,
Yes, all doorbells comes with theft protection.
Ring and Skybell will replace it for free and August will send new device for free, but you will need to pay handling and shipping.
Regards,
Yaro
Hi, Yaro
There is new product dBell HD Live. How good is this product compared with Ring Pro. I like the feature of no monthly fee of cloud storage/NVR.
Hello Patrick,
I just received dBell HD Live for review and planning to publish it soon.
Regards,
Yaro
Great review! I’m looking at Ring Pro…… BUT! What if my existing doorbell is mounted on the SIDE of the house, at a 90 degree angle from the door?
Hi Meg,
You can get one of the Ring Pro Corner Kits up to 45 degrees.
Regards,
Yaro
Can i use any of these in another country like the Philippines?
Hello Jenny,
Yes, you can!
Regards,
Yaro
Hello,
I have the ring now and am considering upgrading to the pro. The major problem I have with the ring is the lag time for the video to start. I can have ups come to my door leave a package and the video starts when the truck is pulling away! It just did defeats the purpose. How is the sensitivity and lag time with the pro?
Hello MeHu,
I didn’t have this issues with neither doorbells.
Remember, it all depends on your wireless network signal, internet download/upload speed.
And Ring Pro motion detector more sensitivity.
Regards,
Yaro
I currently have a skybell ver 2.0. I am ready to upgrade. My question is which one had a louder speaker so the person on the porch can hear me better.
Hi Mark,
Yes, Ring Pro has loud and better audio quality than Skybell HD and of course Skybell 2.0.
Regards,
Yaro
My concern is about video recording. Can I setup to trigger video recording when motion sensor is triggered? Then, how long a video recording? A set length, such as 30 seconds? or until motion sensor ceases to be triggered
Hi Ray,
Yes, the video will start recording right after motion sensor is triggered.
Video will be recording till motion sensor cease to be triggered + some extra time.
Regards,
Yaro
I am currently renting the door doesn’t have a peephole nor can I drill on into the door. Is there a wireless camera that hangs on top of the door?
Hi Michael,
I haven’t seen video doorbells or cameras like this.
You will need to drill to attach video doorbell or camera to the door or to the wall near the door.
Regards,
Yaro
Hi
I have a 4 bed three storey house and need at least a 4-way intercom system for the kitchen, living room, master bedroom and kids floor just so that we can communicate with each other without shouting! What wireless system would you recommend for us? We also need a doorbell so if there is an ‘all-in-one’ option, that would be awesome!!
Hi Omar,
I suggest you to get NuBryte intercoms, but you will need to get separate smart doorbell as well.
Regards,
Yaro
Hi
I am about to buy a doorbell. After reading everything I think the best option is ring pro but the only con that I see is that they charge for cloud storage. Has anyone managed to save to DVR for free instead of the cloud?
Hi Aldo,
Not at the moment, but I am looking for the way how to connect to the DVR as well.
Regards,
Yaro
Thanks Yaro for a very comprehensive review. I am leaning toward the sky bell because of interface with other devices such as security system, lights, etc. I have 3MegPixel digital NVR video and audio recording system available but desire to have ability to talk to people at front door whether at home or not. Your review provided me with the info needed to make my decision easy. Again thanks. T Zimmerman, P.E.
Thank you Terry!
I am not sure how the doorbell will work with NVR. Did you find the way to connect Skybell to NVR?
Let me know how do you like your new Skybell?
Regards,
Yaro
Hi
Will the ring Pro or Basic Ring effect my existing Cox Home wireless alarm system?
I have a camera from them yet it is very obscure & mounted by front door high in an area that can’t be moved-so I am thinking of installing a ring system for better facial recognition
Also~ does the ring pro or basic Ring come with a door bell chime for my inside Door bell- or do I need to hard wire it to my existing door bell for the chime to work inside?
I have a very skinny area where my doorbell is now mounted..therefore A ring Pro would fit better if it covers my existing bell area..Hope this makes sense.. I suppose I can disconnect my door bell & put the ring in a new area if possible
Thank you for your time
Hi El,
Neither of them won’t effect your wireless alarm system.
The Ring doorbell you can power up with just a battery, but Ring Pro required hard-wiring to existed doorbell.
And yes, when you hard wire it then it will work with existing chimes.
The other way is to buy Ring chimes which aren’t expensive and no need wires.
Sound like you can just get Ring Pro and wire it old wires. And yes, Ring Pro is way smaller than original model.
Regards,
Yaro
Yaro, great review. Would you mind dumbing this up a little more for me? $ No object..Im leaning towards August because of the keypad. Here is what I need.
(Front gate is 15-20 yards away hopefully not to far away for signal?)
-Doorbell on gate ( I can hardwire if necessary)
-Front gate lock with key pad
-Video/audio
-All to be used by smart device and able to open lock remotely.
I’m also thinking about :
Lutron for remotely turning on lights
Cannery for some extra cameras
Thanks!!
Hey Frank,
It will work. The distance isn’t problem.
It actually all depends on your wireless router. If for some reasons you will have weak signal you can just add range extender.
Lutron is good way to go .
And I prefer Nest or Arlo cameras compared to Canary.
Let me know how this setup will work out for you.
Regards,
Yaro
hi i am looking for a intercom speaker with or without a camera but could be helpful for my carpentry warehouse where i can speak into my phone thru a app of some sort and my workers at the shop could hear me loud and clear enough in my warehouse
Hi David,
You can pick up Chamberlain NLS series intercom. Easy and simple to use.
Let me know how it worked out for you.
Regards,
Yaro
Thanks for the review, it was helpful. I must mention that your description of facial recognition is not accurate. According to Ring, this is a passive feature that simply gets adjusted by raising or lowering your motion sensitivity. There is no active recognition that will recognize your family etc. It is simply a fancy way of saying the motion sensing creates less false alerts if you so choose. The floating face boxes shown in their videos etc do not exist. There are no settings around this feature. Perhaps it’s planned for the future?
Thanks Mark for information!
Maybe Ring can make facial recognition in the future as software update! it will be great!
The camera is new and I believe Ring still improving the software for it.
Regards,
Yaro
Great news Chuck!
I am glad it worked out and you and your wife liked it!
Thank you for the feedback!
Regards,
Yaro
Hello Calvin,
Yes, you can, but you will need to install either molding block on the top of vinyl or some block behind it.
You can see example here.
Regards,
Yaro
Wow Chuck,
This is super interesting! I am sorry to hear about this, but it’s unique case.
I think Honeywell, Dakota or Jacob Jensen should work. In the worst case scenario if it won’t work you can return the doorbell.
I suggest even to get couple different model to test them.
Let me know how it will work out. I am really curious!
Regards,
Yaro
Hello Marivonne,
Yes, it can.
It will reconnect automatically. It can failed sometimes as well, but you can click reconnect button from the app.
If you changed wifi password or your router then you will need to re-setup the doorbell. You don’t need to unscrew it. Just pull out the front panel and press side button.
Regards,
Yaro
Hi Wayne,
Nest Protect is the way to go even if it’s pricy. I love home automation gadgets and happy to add it to my house.
Regards,
Yaro
Hi Larry,
Unfortunately this not possible because doorbell company need to make app for the specific Smart TV model.
Regards,
Yaro
Hello Paul,
If you see consistent huge delays I suggest to contact Skybell support team. Might be faulty product or incompatibility with your router.
What router do you have at home?
Hello JJ,
Do you mean classic style of the doorbell itself?
There are some options available on Amazon and eBay. But they are not from major brands.
Hello Steven,
No, doorbells don’t come with SD card slot because it will be easy to steal the card and video data on it.
This why all video stores online. Even if robbers will steal your doorbell, you still can see video online.
Hi Mayer,
It’s possible, if you able to make it work please share the steps with us.
Regards,
Yaro
Hello Charles,
Ring Doorbell requires at least 1 Mbps.
Ring Pro and Skybell HD require min 1.5 Mbps.
But it’s just minimum requirements. For optimal performance I suggest bigger upload speed.
Wow Jo!
Thanks for sharing your story and I am glad my review helped to choose!
Hello Dave,
The Ring Video Doorbell with Siver color model is 88RG000FC100.
The model number 7G-88RG02FC1 actually is 88RG002FC100SKU which is Bronze color model
Hello David,
It’s fixed currently to their own cloud.
Hello David,
I am glad my review helped you.
Can you please explain what do you mean by video profile?
Video quality?
Best Regards,
Yaro
Hello Warren,
It’s possible, I am working on diy method to set them up with DVR and will write diy blog post here.
Hello Rebone,
The best bet will be one of Doorbird gate intercoms:
DoorBird Video Door Station D101
DoorBird WiFi Video Doorbell D202
and set it up with any tablet at home.
Let me know with which intercom you decided to go and what is your experience with the device after.
Hello James,
I agree, paying for multiple clouds accounts isn’t great idea, but some people ok to pay more for piece of security.
Skybell HD comes with 7 days free cloud storage which is in 99% cases are good enough.
Also, you can setup system with DVR and record everything at home, but it’s more diy method.
Hello Gordon,
Yes, Ring Pro is an IP camera.
I didn’t connect it to other camera systems, but I am sure there are diy methods available.
I will try to do it myself in future and write blog post about it.
Let me know if you able to figure out and share your results!
Hello Velvetlady,
I understand that you have 5 different doors and would like to have 5 remote buttons and 1 wireless doorbell connected with them and ability to play different mp3 sound when remote buttons pressed.
You can get new Honeywell doorbell with 450 feet range and mp3 tones and you can connect up to 6 remote controls.
Hello Louis,
This is the interesting question!
Phone line provides around 90V AC and power kit should stabilize the power and output optimal power to Ring Pro doorbell.
I didn’t test it myself and I think it’s better to contact Ring support and see what they will answer, to be safe with warranty.
Hello Jarrel,
This will be on my to-do list.
If someone already did this please share with us how did you set up home DVR system with smart doorbell.
Hello Sylvia,
Yes, Skybell HD is more affordable because it does have 7 days free subscriptions and also MSRP price is $50 cheaper right now.
And I would like if companies come out with round vintage smart doorbell.
Hello Ravi,
Yes, with Ring Pro and Skybell HD you will able to add multiple devices and get notification and answer the doorbell.
Hello,
I didn’t know Amcrest cameras was rebranded Dahua products.
I think both companies sourcing from the same manufacturer and private label products.
The main concern will be quality check after production which company should provide their own.
Hello Rob,
Try to place WiFi router or WiFi extender closer to the doorbell, this might help with delays.
In my testing Ring app respond faster than Skybell app.
Hello Rob,
Yes, good idea.
In my testing response time wasn’t consistent all the time.
I will do multiple testings and make the video.
Thank you Tom!
I am glad it was helpful for you.
Hello Max,
Thanks for heads up!
Ring and SKybell both improving their software to improve motion detection.
New Ring Pro software works better than before and doesn’t gave false alerts anymore.
I will do video later comparing motion detector on both devices.
Cheers!
Yaro
If video isn’t priority then you can get 2 Ring Video Doorbell (it has 720p camera only) and 5 cheap android or iOS tablets and connect all together.
It’s not going to be expensive because you can get used tables for cheap and Ring doorbell first gen isn’t expensive anymore.
Hello Juliette,
You should take a look into 1byone intercoms or Doorbird.
Both of them are not just plug-in and play and require some work to setup. But totally worth the hassle.
Hi Alan,
The simplest will be one of wireless intercoms from Chamberlain .
You can just plug-in outside and inside the house and communicate with people outside the house
Hello and thank you Geo,
Both companies improving software and I am happy with Ring Pro right now.
I will make video comparing both doorbells motion detection capabilities.
Regards,
Yaro
Hello Sarah,
You can get any of smart doorbells and use it with your phone or get cheap tablet to use as a monitor.
I suggest Ring Pro or Skybell HD.
Hello,
I suggest always buy from eBay, Amazon or from other retailers that I suggest.
Hello Eileen,
Your best bet will Honeywell series 9 wireless doorbell. I has ability to setup with 6 doorbell buttons. You will need to buy additional pushbuttons separatly.
Hello Kim,
I think you will like Doorbird wireless intercom.
Hello Cal,
Ring doorbell has battery which is good for 6 months without charge or you can connect to wires for permanent solution.
Hello Michael,
Ring always working on improving firmware and software of the doorbell.
I don’t get any lagging like you mentioned and the button is easy to push. I think maybe you got bad device maybe? or refurbished?
Hello Tina,
I suggest Doorbird video intercom which is will be the best choice for you. It has video, weather resistant and you can open the gate remotely.
Hi Barry,
There are 2 solutions:
1. Get intercom with multiple receivers like this one.
It support up to 6 different offices. It looks professional and you can put office names next to the buttons, but it comes with the camera.
2. Or you can get 5 doorbells like Honeywell and put Office Names above on the chimes.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks,
Yaro

Hi Peter,
You can get either Ring Doorbell or August Doorbell.
Both of them weather proof, can open wi-fi smart locks and they have all other features you requested except recording video on existed Hikvision NVR subscription. They have their own subscription services.
Hi Scott,
Yes, you can get 2 August doorbells with 2 August smart locks. You can connect it together and use it with any cell phone or tablet. You can use tablet at home as monitor as well.
Regards,
Yaro
Hi Jack,
I haven’t had a chance to use it.
I think this product is overpriced and there are better options for the price.
The only benefit of the lock that it has code pad.
I will contact the company to review the product.
Regards,
Yaro
Hi Bill,
Yes, you can get 2 video doorbells or video intercom with 2 cameras to connect to front and back doorbell to one or more monitors.
Here are 2 solutions:
– You can get any smart video doorbells like Ring, Skybell, August or others and connect to the iPad or iPod or any other tablet and make it working as monitor.
Let me know if you will have any other question.
Regards,
Yaro
Greeting Derek,
I think you will like Sadotech CXR doorbell with 2 plug-in chimes.
You can plug in chimes into outlet and the range is pretty decent around 500 feet in the house and up to 1000 feet outdoor.
You can check review here and you can buy it here.
Regards,
Yaro
Hi Rene,
Yes, I did. And I really love it.
Here you can find full in-depth review
Next time I will compare side by side Ring doorbell and August doorbell
Regards,
Yaro
Safety comes first.
With new technologies is no brainer to get security system like: video doorbell, smart lock and wireless security camera.
Hi Marketa,
This is good question.
Each video doorbell has different working temperature specifications.
Examples:
– Ring Video Doorbell can function under temperature -20 Celsius (-4 Fahrenheit).
– Skybell can function under -40 Celsius (-40 Fahrenheit).
Regards,
Yaro
